Dr Greg Starmer BSc, MBBS, FRACP, FCSANZ, FESC, FACC
Dr Greg Stamer is a clinical and interventional cardiologist who has proudly called Far North Queensland home for most of his life. Born and raised in the region and originally from the small town of Mareeba, Dr Stamer completed his secondary education in Far North Queensland before travelling to Brisbane to undertake his medical degree at the University of Queensland.
He completed physician training and advanced training in cardiology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Queensland. Following his specialist training, Dr Stamer moved with his family to London, Ontario, Canada, where he completed a fellowship in interventional cardiology at London Health Sciences Centre – University Hospital.
In 2012, Dr Stamer returned to Far North Queensland to commence his cardiology practice at Cairns Hospital and Cairns Private Hospital. He subsequently served as Director of Cardiology at Cairns Hospital until 2024, contributing to the development and delivery of tertiary level specialist cardiac services across the region. He has also represented rural and regional cardiology on the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Advanced Training in Cardiology Committee.
Dr Stamer has authored and co-authored numerous publications, with his research interests encompassing interventional cardiology and the delivery of cardiology services in rural and regional communities. He has maintained a strong commitment to ensuring patients in regional and remote areas have access to contemporary cardiac care and advanced procedural therapies.
His clinical and procedural interests include interventional cardiac and endovascular procedures, including coronary angioplasty and stenting, renal artery denervation for the treatment of hypertension, atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale closure, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Dr Stamer is an accredited TAVR operator in Australia and he provides outreach clinics to the Atherton Tablelands on a regular basis.
Dr Starmer has also been on faculty and an invited speaker at numerous cardiology and rural medicine meetings, both nationally and internationally.
Outside of medicine, Dr Starmer enjoys an active family life with his wife and four children. He has a particular passion for cycling and spending time outdoors, especially camping and exploring Far North Queensland with his family. He is actively involved in the local community and values the opportunity to contribute to the region that has been his childhood home.
Having chosen to return to the region in which he was born and raised, Dr Stamer is particularly passionate about providing high-quality specialist cardiac care to patients throughout Far North Queensland.
